The Story

Ving Rhames

Ving Rhames has built a career around force, control and the sense that there is always more happening beneath the surface. Born in New York City on May 12, 1959, and raised in Harlem, he discovered acting at the High School of Performing Arts before studying drama at SUNY Purchase. There, fellow student Stanley Tucci shortened Irving to Ving. Rhames later transferred to Juilliard and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1983.

His classical training quickly took him to Shakespeare in the Park, where he appeared in Richard III, and his stage work also included Richard II, Ajax and the Broadway production The Boys of Winter. That foundation helps explain the weight he brings to the screen: even in action movies and crime stories, Rhames tends to make authority feel earned rather than merely announced.

After making his screen debut in the 1985 television film Go Tell It on the Mountain, Rhames appeared in Native Son, Patty Hearst and Casualties of War. The 1990s gave him two defining parts. As Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction, he became central to one of the decade’s most discussed crime films. Two years later, he first played computer hacker Luther Stickell in Mission: Impossible, beginning an unusually durable run alongside Tom Cruise. Rhames appeared in all eight Mission: Impossible films through The Final Reckoning in 2025, making Luther a steady presence across the series.

His film work has ranged from Rosewood and Out of Sight to Bringing Out the Dead, Baby Boy and the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. He has also used his voice to memorable effect as Cobra Bubbles in Lilo & Stitch and as a narrator for television and advertising.

Rhames won a Golden Globe for his performance in Don King: Only in America. At the 1998 ceremony, he handed the award to fellow nominee Jack Lemmon, a generous moment that reflected his view of acting as something larger than individual recognition. Across stage, television, animation and film, Rhames has remained a character actor with the presence of a lead.
