Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro has built a career on intensity, precision and an unusual willingness to let characters remain difficult. Born in New York City on August 17, 1943, he grew up in Greenwich Village and Little Italy, began acting classes at the Dramatic Workshop and made his school stage debut at ten as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. He later studied at HB Studio, the Actors Studio and with Stella Adler before pursuing acting professionally.

His early film work included collaborations with Brian De Palma, but Mean Streets marked the beginning of the partnership that would become central to his career. As Johnny Boy, De Niro brought volatile energy to Martin Scorsese’s New York crime drama. He followed it by playing the young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

With Scorsese, De Niro repeatedly found new variations on obsession, violence and self-destruction. Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver is restless and isolated; Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull is physically imposing and emotionally ruinous. De Niro gained 60 pounds and learned to box for the latter role, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Their later films together included The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino and The Irishman, showing how effectively he could shift between explosive menace and tightly controlled stillness.

That range extends beyond crime drama. De Niro played a changed Vietnam veteran in The Deer Hunter, a catatonic patient in Awakenings and an insecure mob boss in Analyze This. Meet the Parents turned his severity into comedy: a suspicious look or carefully measured pause could do the work of a punchline. He also moved behind the camera, directing and starring in A Bronx Tale, then directing The Good Shepherd.

His later work has continued to move between comedy, drama and television. Silver Linings Playbook brought another Academy Award nomination, while his reunion with Scorsese in Killers of the Flower Moon earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Across those shifts, De Niro’s most compelling quality remains his attention to behavior—the sense that every silence, glance and sudden movement belongs specifically to the person he is playing.
