Renée Zellweger has built a career around an unusual kind of versatility: she can make heightened comedy feel emotionally grounded, then turn toward drama without losing the directness that makes her performances connect. Born Renée Kathleen Zellweger on April 25, 1969, in Katy, Texas, she attended Katy High School and later graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in English in 1991. Her early screen work included an uncredited appearance in Dazed and Confused and a small role in Reality Bites, followed by starring opportunities in The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Whole Wide World.

Her breakthrough arrived as Dorothy Boyd in Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire. The performance earned her the National Board of Review’s award for Breakthrough Performance — Female and established the warmth, resolve and comic instinct that would remain central to much of her work. As Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones’s Diary, Zellweger found the awkwardness and vulnerability inside a broad romantic comedy, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She received another Best Actress nomination for playing Roxie Hart in Rob Marshall’s Chicago, a role that drew on a sharper, more theatrical side of her screen presence.

Cold Mountain brought a different energy. As Ruby Thewes in Anthony Minghella’s drama, Zellweger delivered a forceful supporting performance that won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. After a deliberate multi-year slowdown from constant film work, she returned to leading roles with Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016.

Her portrayal of Judy Garland in Rupert Goold’s Judy brought renewed awards attention and an Academy Award for Best Actress.
