Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman has built a screen career on quiet authority, measured delivery, and an ability to suggest his characters have lived well beyond the edges of the frame. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, on June 1, 1937, he first acted in a school play at nine and later studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse after serving in the United States Air Force.

His path was grounded in stage and television work long before Hollywood settled on how to use him. Freeman appeared on Broadway and became familiar to American audiences through the PBS children’s series The Electric Company. His film breakthrough came with Street Smart, in which his volatile performance as a street hustler pushed sharply against the wise, fatherly roles he had begun to receive and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The range was there from the start. He reprised his stage role as chauffeur Hoke Colburn in Driving Miss Daisy, played Sergeant Major John Rawlins in Glory and brought humor to Azeem in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. As Ned Logan in Unforgiven and Red in The Shawshank Redemption, Freeman showed how much he could do without crowding a scene. His work as detective William Somerset in Seven drew similar power from restraint, weariness and close attention.

Freeman won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Million Dollar Baby, playing former boxer Eddie Dupris. He later portrayed Nelson Mandela in Invictus, receiving another Best Actor nomination, and played Lucius Fox across Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Other roles have moved easily between thrillers, comedies, science fiction and family films, while his voice work has included documentary narration, television presenting and animated performance.

He has also worked behind the camera as a producer and director, making his feature directing debut with Bopha! Freeman’s career is unusually broad, but its center remains clear: a calm, grounded presence capable of carrying moral weight, dry humor or genuine menace.
