Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank has built a screen career around characters pushed to their physical and emotional limits. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1974, she first appeared on stage at nine in The Jungle Book. Her early life also included competitive swimming and gymnastics, experience that later served her well when she landed her first leading film role as Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid.

After a supporting appearance in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Swank worked across film and television, including a 16-episode run as Carly Reynolds on Beverly Hills, 90210. Being written out of the series proved to be a crucial turn: it freed her to audition for Brandon Teena in Boys Don’t Cry. Swank prepared intensively for the part, and her performance earned her the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actress. She later said that, if offered the role today, she would refuse it and believed a trans actor should have the opportunity to play the character.

Swank won both awards again for Million Dollar Baby, playing a boxer after extensive training in the ring and weight room. The role reinforced what had become central to her screen presence: determination without polish, toughness complicated by vulnerability, and a willingness to let effort show.

Her later work has moved freely among drama, romance, horror, comedy and television. She played teacher Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers, appeared opposite Gerard Butler in P.S. I Love You, and portrayed aviator Amelia Earhart in Amelia, which she also co-executive produced. Other roles include an ALS patient in You’re Not You, Special Agent Sarah Grayson in Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky, Gail Getty in Trust and an astronaut in the Netflix series Away.

Swank has also taken an active role behind the camera, executive producing What They Had as well as starring in it. Across these projects, she has remained especially convincing as people who keep moving when circumstances give them every reason not to.
