Djimon Hounsou

Djimon Hounsou brings physical authority and emotional weight to the screen, qualities that have served him across historical drama, science fiction, action and superhero movies. Born in Cotonou, Benin, on April 24, 1964, he moved to Lyon with his brother Edmond at 12. After leaving school and experiencing homelessness, a chance encounter with a photographer led him to Thierry Mugler and a modelling career in Paris. He moved to the United States in 1990, having already begun appearing in music videos for performers including Madonna, Janet Jackson and Tina Turner.

Hounsou made his film debut in Without You I'm Nothing and later took television parts in Beverly Hills, 90210 and ER. A larger role in Stargate helped establish his screen career, but his performance as Cinqué in Steven Spielberg's Amistad brought wide critical attention and a Golden Globe nomination. As Juba in Gladiator, he made a supporting role register through restraint, dignity and force.

His work in In America earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, making him the fourth African man nominated for an Oscar. Blood Diamond brought a second nomination in the same category, along with the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor. Those performances showed how effectively Hounsou can balance commanding presence with vulnerability.

His later career has moved comfortably between grounded drama and large-scale genre filmmaking. He played Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, voiced Drago Bludvist in How to Train Your Dragon 2, and entered the DC universe as the voice of King Ricou in Aquaman and the Wizard in Shazam! Roles in Furious 7, The Legend of Tarzan and A Quiet Place Part II further reflect his range within action and spectacle.

Hounsou also expanded into directing with the 2018 documentary In Search of Voodoo: Roots to Heaven, an examination of the history, nature and religious practices of West African Vodun. Across his work, he remains an actor able to give even the biggest productions a strong human center.
